Future Designers Ace Flexible Packaging Challenge

The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA), Annapolis, MD, revealed the winners of the FPA 2022 Student Flexible Packaging Design Challenge. The three awards — First Place Honors, Second Place Honors, and an Honorable Mention — all went to student teams from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, Menomonie, WI.

The winning packages are:

  • First Place: A package that solves the problem of what to do with pistachio shells;
  • Second Place: A microwavable ramen pouch that reduces waste;
  • Honorable Mention: A flexible vegetable tray that reduces costs and boosts sustainability.

In the 2022 challenge, FPA received 39 concept outlines from some of the top US packaging design programs. Of these, 17 were chosen to continue to the development phase.

FPA’s Emerging Leadership Council oversees the student competition and judged this year’s challenge. The awards are $1,000 for First Place and $500 for Second Place.

This FPA competition challenges student package designers to develop flexible packaging solutions that address issues such as convenience or food protection. Guidelines state that the solution should advance the use of flexible packaging, represent an improvement over an existing flexible package, convert a nonflexible package to a flexible one, or provide a flexible pack for a product not currently available in flexible packaging.
