An extremely lightweight material made mostly of air, Styrofoam can serve as a highly effective insulator in houses, pipes, and even roads.

Polystyrene can also be formed into a hard, brittle material. In this state, it is often used for the manufacture of plastic forks and similar items. In addition, so-called “expanded” polystyrene is used to produce coffee cups and soft packing cushions.
