It’s busy as always in the plastics policy arena. In December, we can preview the upcoming U.S. midterm elections, and look at the Biden administration getting an earful on whether it should require government agencies to buy fewer single-use plastics. In the states, we’ll discuss California lawmakers passing – and Gov. Gavin Newsom vetoing – a bill that would have mandated up to 30 percent recycled content in thermoformed packaging like berry containers and yogurt cups. In Louisiana, environmental justice issues came to the forefront, with a judge revoking the air permits of a huge Formosa plastics resin plant over pollution worries. If that’s not enough, globally, diplomats at the UN General Assembly got ready to kick off talks on the global plastics treaty. Closer to the factory floor, companies are getting ready to talk sustainability at the industry’s biggest gathering, the K Show in Germany, in late October.
