Recycling Polymers

What is a polymer? This is the umbrella term for a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic substances. Polymers found in nature include rubber and cotton. There is also a large number of synthetic polymers out there—in fact, literally every type of plastic you will find can be classified as a polymer. Let’s take a look at the varied kinds of synthetic polymers available in commercial products.

  • Polypropylene – This versatile polymer is used in a broad range of industries, including the automotive sector (which uses it for various car parts) and the textile business (which often uses it for carpeting). Polypropylene has the resin ID code "5."
  • Polyvinyl chloride – More commonly known as PVC, this polymer is one of the most frequently occurring. PVC is often used to manufacture pipes and bottles, but it can also be specially treated to form a relatively flexible material suitable for inflatable products, insulation, and shower curtains. Polyvinyl chloride has the resin ID code “3.”
  • Polystyrene – This is a hard and generally clear polymer used in food containers, DVD cases, and many other applications. Styrofoam, a lightweight material often used as insulation, is also manufactured from this polymer. Polystyrene has the resin ID code “6.”
  • Polyethylene – The most common forms of this substance are low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Used in a vast array of consumer products, these have the resin ID codes of "4" (LDPE) and "2" (HDPE).
  • Polyethylene terephthalate – This material is a type of polyester used to manufacture many kinds of fabrics. Alternatively, it can be used in food and liquid containers, among other uses. Polyethylene terephthalate has the resin ID code “1.”

As experts in polymer recycling, we’re always eager to hear from customers who have materials of this nature that they would like to exchange for cash. Please contact Polychem USA for more information about our polymers recycling program.
