PP Compound First to Receive UL Certification for Thermal Runaway Protection of EV Batteries

Sabic’s Stamax 30YH570 resin for use in electric vehicle (EV) battery systems has earned the UL Verified Mark from Underwriters Laboratories. The compound is reportedly the first-ever polymer to pass the thermal runaway box test, according to UL 2596, Test Method for Thermal and Mechanical Performance of Battery Enclosure Materials. This 30% glass fiber–reinforced polypropylene (PP) copolymer resin, offered under Sabic’s Bluehero electrification initiative, is the first EV-grade polymer to…

Can 3D Printing Make Retreaded Tires Greener?

The tire retreading industry applies fresh tread to 4.5 million tires a year, and Mordor Intelligence forecasts the global retreading market to grow from $5.45 billion this year to $6.41 billion in 2028. While each of these tires represents the reuse of most of a tire, there is still 9 pounds of material removed on average from each of those tires, generating a mountain of waste rubber. Compounding the matter…

Customizable 3D Barriers Prevent Thermal Runaway in EVs

Range-enhancing high-energy-density lithium-ion batteries increase the risk of thermal runaway. As a preventive measure, Freudenberg Sealing Technologies has developed thermal barriers fabricated by injection molding and extrusion that help to slow down thermal runaway by increasing resistance to propagation. The new three-dimensional (3D) thermal barriers can be used in various locations within the battery and have already proven reliable in their initial series productions. Well over 100 million electric cars…
