Defunkify and rePurpose Global Recover 41,000+ Pounds of Plastic Waste

Eugene, OR–based cleaning products company Defunkify is doing its part to reduce the amount of plastic waste languishing in landfills, polluting oceans and waterways, and being incinerated. In 2021, Defunkify, in partnership with waste-reduction coalition rePurpose Global, removed 41,571 pounds of nature-bound plastic waste.

Defunkify is committed to funding the recovery of as much nature-bound plastic waste as it uses in its packaging and product distribution. The company contributes a percentage of every Defunkify purchase to plastic-reduction efforts.

“We are proud to have funded the recovery of over 41,000 pounds of plastic from nature, accounting for everything that directly touches the products we sell,” including bottles, closures, spray nozzles, bags, and tape, said Richard Geiger, Defunkify CEO, in a prepared statement. “We plan to take this one step further in 2022.”

He added, “We are laser-focused on transparency when it comes to our ingredients and the formulation of products. We list all our ingredients, plus their source and purpose, right on the label, and we are no different when it comes to the transparency about our packaging.”

The company’s waste-reduction project has a social objective, as well. Through its collaboration with rePurpose Global, Defunkify works with Waste4Change, an Indonesian social enterprise whose mission is responsible waste management. This part of the project adds an income stream for waste workers in West Java, Indonesia, who typically earn less than $5 per day and endure poor working conditions and discrimination.

New York–based rePurpose Global helps companies calculate, reduce, and offset their plastic footprint. The organization offers Plastic Neutral Certification, which funds the removal of as much plastic as a business uses, as well as Plastic Negative Certification, through which a company funds the removal of at least twice as much plastic as it uses in its products.

According to the organization, rePurpose Global has had an impact on systemic change for people in 26 countries and for hundreds of brands, including Colgate, Grove Collaborative, AB InBev, Google, and The Hut Group. It reportedly eliminates millions of pounds of plastic waste from nature each year.

“The fact that making a positive impact on people and the planet is a core value that Defunkify and rePurpose Global share makes this such a catalytic partnership,” said Aditya Siroya, co-founder and Chief Impact Officer at rePurpose Global. “We hope that the impact that Defunkify is enabling encourages other cleaning brands to take responsibility for their own plastic waste and their impact on the environment.”
