Phillips-Medisize has begun the process of permanently closing its plant in Medford, WI, where it employs approximately 170 people, according to reporting from various media outlets. The facility will close permanently by the end of 2023 and production will move to a company plant in Phillips, WI.

A contract design and manufacturing organization (CDMO) with considerable injection molding capabilities serving the medical device and pharmaceutical industries, among others, Phillips-Medisize notified state officials in a letter dated June 5, 2023, that it anticipated a permanent layoff of approximately 83 employees “beginning on or about Aug. 7, 2023, with approximately 46 employees being affected at that time.” Another reduction of 37 or so positions will take place in phases and is expected to be completed by the end of September, the company said in the letter.

Operators were the most affected by the layoffs, with 28 listed in the letter. Mold technicians, manufacturing engineers, material handlers, and other personnel being let go numbered in the low single digits per job title.

All employees will receive 60 days’ notice and available positions at other Phillips locations are being shared with affected employees, the company said.

Phillips-Medisize is part of the Molex group and is backed by Koch Industries.
