Development of Sustainable Soft Materials Accelerated

Photo Credit: VTT We recently heard from Finland’s VTT Technical Research Center regarding the newest development of it Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) toolbox ‘ProperTune’. Essentially the center’s team, led by research team leader Antti Puisto, has expanded the application of the ProperTune beyond hard materials like metals to now model and design soft materials like wood, polymers and plastics. A key contender for soft materials is bacteria. The team’s…

‘Digitalization’ – Awkward Term for a Vital Concept

Digitalization was a unifying theme of K 2022. (Photo: Messe Duesseldorf/ctillmann) Industry 4.0 … digitalization … industrial internet of things (IIoT) … smart factories – for some people, the constant background buzz of such terms may bring on an attack of MEGO (My Eyes Glaze Over). But make no mistake: This is the sound of the future of manufacturing in advanced industrialized countries. That message was brought home at the…

Small-Cell Foam Extrusion Reduces Material Consumption

New foam extrusion technology from Switzerland’s Promix Solutions promises to reduce raw material consumption by 20% thanks to a proprietary process that creates small, evenly distributed cells. Foam with 50-micron-sized cells has 27 times more cells than foam with cells measuring 150-microns at the same density, Promix said. The company’s Microcell Technology relies on multiple factors to create those tiny cells, including high-precision dispensing of blowing fluids in the supercritical stage, unique cooling…
